Managing Trees in Conservation Areas

Trees in conservation areas are subject to a degree of protection in that the local planning authority must be informed of any proposed work. If a particular tree is already subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) then it is protected in law by that Order and any work is subject to refusal or conditions.

Conservation areas preserve the heritage and amenity of an area and they must be treated with a great deal of respect.

Only trees with a diameter of over 75mm, measured at 1.5m off the ground are subject to notice. Although there are a few exceptions most domestic or commercial work in a conservation area for trees over 75mm diameter requires notification.

G4 Gardens had considerable experience of operating in conservation areas in Surrey and London. As with a TPO we will normally liaise with the Tree or Arboricutural Officer before submitting formal notice to work out on the tree, giving the required 6 weeks’ notice. This period gives the authority time to consider whether or not to make the tree subject to a TPO.
